The Death of a Whitewashing

An Alentejo House with it's typical "Murat finishing"

The Alentejo is that part of Portugal’s territory immediately north of Algarve and goes all the way up to the river Tejo, as a general reference.

It stretches across two thirds of central and southern Portugal and takes in undulating prairies, endless olive trees, cork trees, wheat fields, white-washed houses, Roman ruins, charming towns and an all embracing tranquillity.

Its houses are very typical. Post-card typical. White-washed with a vibrant blue, or dark yellow, stripe on its contours which is what gives them their unmistakable identity.

The simplistic but remarkable contrast of this against the remainder of its whitewashed walls have made these houses centrepieces of many an artist’s work.

Haywhimee, Roses and Thorns

(image from here)

Haywhimee is a little town that doesn’t exist. It’s located in the middle of our imagination.

Yet we think it’s of crucial importance to the Maddie case. We would even say it’s where the solution to the case lies.

Haywhimee is very peculiar. There are many Haywhimeeans but none do in fact live in Haywhimee. The main reason being that Haywhimee doesn’t exist, as we said.

But although Haywhimee is fictional, Haywhimeeans are not. They are very real.

SY - The Movie

It has been said that Euclides Monteiro was the reason for the PJ to have reopened the Maddie process that was archived in 2008.

It was also said that PJ have abandoned the Euclides-lead and are now focusing on a foreigner who never lived in Portugal. Euclides and a foreigner. That’s how many suspects we have been told exist on the Portuguese investigation. Not saying they were the only ones but that they’re the only ones the press has reported since PJ reopened the case in 2013.

The British have been much, much more imaginative. This post will try to show you just how much.
